Orangeburg pipes were very common in the Valley from the 1940s to the 1980s, and they’re made out of paper with an inner coating of tar. As you might imagine, this is not the most durable material available for sewage pipes.
If you live in an older home and you’re not sure what your sewer pipes are made out of, a plumbing inspection could save you tens of thousands of dollars and months-long repairs.
If you or someone you know is planning on buying a home that was built before 1990, it’s vital that you have a plumber come out and inspect the sewer pipes. Even most home inspectors would not catch this type of issue, as they don’t usually inspect the pipes that attach the home to the sewer system.
